I spent the day with Matt Levesque, a regenerative farmer living a peaceful, grounded life on his homestead with his family in Glencoe, NB. He shows me what he feeds his pigs, how he works with his horses, and what type of cows he raises. It’s a look into a lifestyle that’s all about caring for the land, and the animals, and living simply.

He introduces an innovative local grocery program where farmers trade for leftover food that would have otherwise been discarded, creating a sustainable cycle that benefits both the farm and the community. He takes me through his daily routine, collecting this food and repurposing it to feed his animals.

Grocery stores participating in the LOOP program set aside food that can’t be sold due to cosmetic imperfections, damaged packaging, or approaching best-before dates. Rather than discarding it, they partner with local farmers who pick up the unsellable items regularly—often weekly or even daily.

The rescued food is then used to feed livestock or, in some cases, composted to enrich the soil. This simple yet effective system diverts tons of organic waste from landfills while helping small-scale farmers significantly reduce their feed costs.
